The Schildkröt Brand
Established in Bavaria in 1873 by Friedrich Bensinger, the Reinische Gummi-und Celluloid Fabrik was the major producer of celluloid in Germany.
Schildkrote is the German word for turtle, and the company’s main trademark was a walking turtle encased in a diamond, which was molded on the doll necks and bodies like Celluloid Schildkröt 37 Doll.
Therfore the mark is raised. In some cases the diamond is omitted, or the turtle is enclosed in a circle, square, oval, triangle, or hexagon. Other manufacturers of celluloid also used the trademark of a turtle therfore to represent durability, however, the raiser turtle-in-a-diamond was exclusive to the Rheinische Gummi und Celluloid -Fabrik.
The Schildkrot Family
From the 1930s, celluloid dolls began to be given the character of more real play dolls, creating different dolls and dolls creating a wide family of dolls.
Subsequently, The Hans doll was produced together with her older brother Ingie from 1933/34. Marked with the drawing of the turtle inside a diamond.
Early models were also offered in a baby body with a movable head. However, the body was the typical standing doll with arms and legs articulated this shape changed from 1939 and 40. They occurred until the late fifties.
The Inge model was probably the most typical and best-selling, but also probably the most copied turtle brand doll.
For example, a characteristic of this type of child is the small, molded mouth closed, similar to the model of it’s brother Hans.
Inge was produced in the most varied versions: body colours bright flesh, matte flesh or brown. Hair modeled in different colors such as: bright blonde, brown, red hair.
