The Virgin with Jesus
Virgin with Child or Virgin Mary are the conventional denominations to designate the most frequent artistic theme in the iconography of Marian art. Likewise, it’s One of the most treated in all Christian art: the representation of the Virgin Mary together with the Child Jesus, her son.
After some initial resistance and controversy, the name “Mother of God” (Theotokos), was officially adopted by the Christian church at the Council of Ephesus, 431. The first surviving depiction of the Virgin and Child could be the mural in the Catacomb of Priscilla, it is a Seated Virgin that appears to be breastfeeding the Child, she is turning her head to look at the viewer.
The first consistent representations of the Virgin Mother with her Son were developed in the Eastern Empire. Oriental examples show the enthroned Virgin. Wearing the Byzantine crown inlaid with pearls with pendants, with the Child Jesus on her lap, as in the fragments of fresco in the Basilica of St. Clement below, in Rome.
Subsequently, The growing importance of the cult of the Virgin in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries developed into a wider variety of types to satisfy the current of more intensely personal forms of piety.
