Saint  Lucia

To sum up, Saint Lucia (Syracuse, 283-ibid., 304) was a Christian martyr, who suffered martyrdom during the persecution of Diocletian. It is venerated in the Catholic, Orthodox and Lutheran Church.

Firstly, Lucia means "Light" or "she who carries light." She was brought up in the Christian
faith. She consecrated her life to God and made a vow of virginity.

Furthermore, Her mother, who was ill, promised her to marry a young pagan and she, in order to get rid of that commitment, persuaded her to go to pray at the tomb of Agatha of Catania in order to cure her illness .

Subsequently, As her mother healed, Lucia asked him to release her from the commitment, let her consecrate her life to God and donate her fortune to the poorest. His mother agreed. But her suitor accused her before the proconsul Pascasio because she was a Christian, in the time of the Emperor Diocletian.

After that, She was buried in the same place where a sanctuary dedicated to her was built in 313, which was the destination of pilgrimages in her honor. According to tradition, her story spread throughout Sicilyː "she consecrated her virginity with martyrdom, for God is pleased with her purity and holiness."

Since time immemorial, Saint Lucia has been the patron saint of the blind and a lawyer for vision problems. His devotees in gratitude for healings offer him gold or silver eyes as an ex- vow. Saint Lucia Dimosa

The Scandinavian Catholic, Orthodox and Lutheran Churches celebrate their feast on December 13.
